The numerals are cut down into the faces and filled with gold, real recessed geometry rather than printed on, the one steady thing on a body that will not hold a single color. Fire opal comes out of old volcanic country, where hot water carried silica down into the cracks and left it there to set, one thin layer at a time. Cutters work the stone warm and polish it slow, because a piece this bright will craze if it is rushed. Flame-callers, forge priests, and anyone who reads by their own light carry it as a matter of course. Held still it is simply red. Rolled, the whole surface catches.
