The numerals are cut down into the faces and filled silver, real recessed geometry so the metal sits at the floor of each cut and stays legible against all that burning red. Redshift is what happens to light when whatever threw it is racing away: the color slides down the spectrum toward red, and the faster it runs the redder it goes. Astronomers read distance out of that shift, which means every red thing in a deep field is also an old thing. Roll a set of these and you are throwing light that left a long time ago.
